We are pleased to announce The Foundation has begun its library for the P.R.E. Horse Museum. These wonderful books will be available to scholars or P.R.E. aficionados by visiting the Albuquerque, New Mexico office of The Foundation. The collection includes those books which are currently in The Foundation's library along with the addition of our recent gift of 30 P.R.E. horse books owned by Vaughan Smith from the family of Vaughan. About the P.R.E.Many books have been written on the culture surounding the Pure Spanish Horse. The list below is in the Foundation's current collection and are highly recommended. Las Mejores Ganaderias del Mundo Pura Raza Española. Volumes I and II. Published by Caballos Campeones, S.L., Barcelona, Spain. Each volume contains a pictorial history complemented by side-by-side English and Spanish words written on over 30 (per volume) of the best P.R.E. breeding farms in the world. El Escorial: the eighth wonder of the world. This monastery, founded by the same King Felipe II who founded our P.R.E. breed, commemorates the victory of the Spanish against the French in 1557. (3) Al-Andalus y el Caballo. Compendium of essays with references by noted scholars on Spain from 711A.D. to the present and how the P.R.E. (and Arabian) were vital parts of that history. Al-Andalus: the Art of Islamic Spain. Edited by Jerirlynn D. Dodds. Published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY. For over 700 years, there was a dominant Islamic presence in Spain. This volume studies the art and architecture of the period, with 24 essays from scholars richly enhanced with photographs. Spain: a History in Art. By Bradley Smith. 245 works of art from Spanish museums and private collections are discussed and put in context of the history of Spain at the time the paintings were completed. A must to see how the basics of horsemanship have remained basically unchanged for centuries. Among the most famous of Xenophon's statements: "Anything forced and misunderstood can never be beautiful." Le Maneige Royal. By Antoine de Pluvinel. Translated into English (and Spanish). Translation by Hilda Nelson and published by J A Allen & Co Ltd, London. Exquisite drawings showing each step of high school, "haute ecole". Pluvinel wrote about the classical beauty of man and horse: based on harmony, order, and moderation. Also includes a glossary. (3) The Royal Horse and Rider: Painting, Sculpture and Horsemanship 1500-1800. By Walter Liedtke. The author surveys international tendencies in the history of art and at the same time considers special questions, such as precisely what a horse is doing and why it is iportant to the meaning of a particular painting or sculpture.
